where your scar is

Anne Heaton and I cut this video recently: I love Anne. You know she is from my home town?

Let me tell you a story about Anne and me. We are both in a bit of a fog lately, and she came over to clear her head, and I thought, hazily, that I needed to step up to the plate. I know, I thought, I'll take us over to Fresh Pond.

It was dark out, and we passed a couple of teenagers sitting in the road. I turned the car around to park, and they thought we were picking them up, belatedly sticking their thumbs out like hitchhikers. I shook my heads at them, and thought: I hope they don't mess with us. Fresh Pond is scary enough.

In the day, it's beautiful. Calm, full of little dogs, aging runners, slow-moving couples, young familes. At night, we walk the little footpath from the street to the mouth of the woods. The woods: only 50 yards deep, but so black at first gaze, so dark and so quiet that I began to wonder if this was too good of an idea...

Because the idea was, this pond was going to scare our troubles away. And as I stared into the dark, I felt all my troubles and worries scramble down to the base of my spine, leaving my eyes and ears naked to the eerie darkness. I moaned. I said, "Anne, we don't have to do this if you don't want to. Just say the word." But we started walking in anyway...
